IPL Hair Removal

IPL Hair Removal treatment is commonly used by both men and women to remove excess or unwanted hair.

Them most common places treated include the legs, bikini, back, chest, underarms and face.

Traditional methods of hair removal (such as shaving or waxing) are only temporary, giving relief only for a short time frame before the hair grows back whereas IPL hair removal offers up to an 85% permanent hair reduction. Top up treatments may be required each year following the completion of your course of treatments. It is important to note that results vary from person to person due to various factors which include, hormones and genetics. This is will be discussed during your free consultation.

Constant shaving and plucking also encourages ingrown hairs and skin irritation – another reason why you should invest in a more long-term, effective and safe method of hair removal.

For IPL to work effectively, hair is required to allow the light to target and destroy the root, therefore it's best not to wax or epilate ahead of your session.

Benefits of IPL Hair Removal

Professional IPL treatments are administered by trained and certified technicians. Their expertise ensures that the device is used correctly, optimizing settings based on your skin and hair type. This precision enhances the effectiveness of each session and reduces the risk of side effects.

In a professional setting, treatments are tailored to your specific needs. A full assessment of your hair and skin type, medical history, and hair removal goals is carried out to create a customised plan. This personalised approach increases the likelihood of achieving the best possible results.

Professional clinics often use state-of-the-art IPL devices that offer more power and advanced features compared to home-use versions. These high-quality machines can treat larger areas more efficiently and may provide better results in fewer sessions. A home use device may be used following a complete course of treatments to help maintain the results.

In a professional environment, safety is a top priority. Clinics follow strict hygiene standards, and technicians are trained to minimize discomfort and manage any potential side effects.

Professional IPL clinics offer comprehensive care that extends beyond the treatment itself. They provide pre-treatment consultations and post-treatment care instructions to ensure the best results and skin health. Ongoing support and follow-up sessions are part of the package.

Although professional IPL treatments involve upfront costs, the long-term savings can be significant. The reduction in hair growth minimizes the need for frequent purchases of razors, waxing kits, and other hair removal products, making it a cost-effective solution over time.

The Treatment Process

The journey begins with a thorough consultation and patch test which must be carried out a minimum of 3 days prior to your first treatment. This step is crucial to assess your skin type, hair colour and medical history.
We will discuss your hair removal goals, areas you wish to treat and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. A small area is tested to determine how your skin reacts to IPL, ensuring safety and effectiveness.

A full course of 8 sessions are usually always recommended to achieve optimal results, spaced 4 to 6 weeks in advance. Here at Westend Laser Clinic we offer a free treatment on month 10 in order to fully assess how the hair has responded. The results vary based on hair and hair skin type, with darker hair and lighter skin responding best to IPL. Periodic maintenance sessions may be required to sustain hair reduction, typically once or twice a year.

Apply a soothing cream or aloe vera to the treated area to reduce redness and irritation. It is important that you avoid direct sun exposure and use a high SPF if you go outside to protect the treated area. Refrain from using hot water, saunas and vigorous activities for up to 72 hours post treatment. Do not wax or pluck hairs between sessions, shaving is the only method of hair removal that you can use.

frequently asked questions

Laser hair removal works by destroying the base of the hair follicle which is the source of new hair growth. A short burst of light energy is delivered onto the skin surface by the IPL beam. The melanin (colour pigment) in the hair absorbs the light and converts this energy into heat. If the hair is in it’s growth stage, the heat will travel down the hair follicle to the root and destroy the germination center preventing regrowth.

Hair grows in cycles, which means not all hair follicles are in the growth stage at the same time. It is essential that the hair shaft is present in the hair follicle for the treatment to be successful. A number of treatments are required to ensure that all hairs are treated effectively.

It is important that you cut or shave the area where you are having treatment for more effective results. Please do not wax, pluck or thread as this will remove the hair from the follicle that is being targeted.

An initial consultation is required and should take no longer than 30 minutes. In the consultation, the area of hair removal will be evaluated, the medical risks and benefits of IPL hair removal will be thoroughly explained to you. We will establish a price per treatment and will identify an approximate number of treatments necessary.

The IPL fires short pulses of light which can feel warm against the skin surface. We use a cooler prior to the treatment to lower the skin surface temperature ensuring that most of our clients experience no more than mild discomfort. After initial consultation and at your discretion we will require you to do a hair removal test patch, this is to check that the laser and your body will react in a positive way to the treatment – this will need to be carried out at least one week before the treatment starts. As long as there’s no adverse reaction after the test patch, then the hair removal treatment can continue.

IPL's work best on dark hairs on fair skin as the darker pigmentation in the hair absorbs the light more effectively. Unfortunately, light blonde, white and grey hair have little or no melanin and do not respond to an IPL treatment. Unlike laser treatments, which emit a specific wavelength, IPL works like a flash lamp sending out scattered wavelengths of light, making IPL very targeted. That also means it affects the pigment of your skin too so IPL only really works for those with fair skin and dark hair.

Sessions can be anything between 10 minutes to 1 hour depending on the area(s) being treated.

On average 5-8 sessions which are needed every 4/6 weeks. The exact number of treatments will depend on hair colour, skin colour, hair density and hair growth cycle. Fairer hair or dark skin will require more treatments, your suitability will established during the consultation process. Top up treatments may be required each year following your completed course of treatments which is free of charge at Westend Laser Clinic.

IPL hair removal is very safe as long as its performed by trained professionals on adequate machines. After the first session the treated area may feel hot and will probably be red or swollen. Do not use any perfumed products on the skin for 48 hours after treatment and when cleansing use a good antibacterial soap. Protect your skin from the sun for the first two weeks after treatment, then use sunblock for the following 6 weeks. Cold compresses or Aloe Vera gel will help to sooth the area, do not use ice packs direct to the skin.
